Comcast is apparently out to trim the fat out of its shiny new toy as NBC Universal dropped its iconic peacock, the globe silhouette, and even the space between its name (“NBCUniversal” now thank you very much) in a message delivered to the company’s 25,000 employees at a town hall gathering earlier this week.
NBCUniversal is the umbrella brand for a large variety of entities (it owns a total of 41 companies, only 14 of which are associated with the NBC and Universal brands). As such, it only makes sense for the corporate entity to be brand neutral and to not play favorites with the legacy properties.
Its difficult to argue with that logic and its not like peacock and globe are disappearing from their original homes — NBC & Universal Studios are both retaining their respective marks. I was never a huge fan of the original logo but it did manage to convey the two entities just fine. The new logo seems void of any identity and history, which may be fine for its new owner.
